Immediate Dentures

An immediate denture can be a complete or partial denture inserted immediately following the removal of natural teeth (on the same day). Approximately 4 - 6 weeks prior to the removal of your natural teeth the technician will take a mould of your mouth so that the false teeth on your immediate denture can be placed in a similar position to where your natural teeth were. There may be 2 - 3 appointments with your clinical dental technician prior to your extractions and insertion of your new dentures with the dentist.

This treatment involves:

  • The patient chooses the teeth and shade

  • An initial appointment where impressions are taken

  • Seeing the dentist for extraction(s)

  • Placement of dentures by dentist

Why does an immediate denture cost more?
After extractions the gums will slowly heal and the jaw bone and gum will slowly shrink, creating a gap between your immediate denture and your gums. Once the extraction sites have healed, approximately 12 weeks later, the immediate dentures will need to be relined with new acrylic to fill the gap. This reline of your immediate denture is at an extra cost.

Disadvantages of Immediate Dentures

  • An increased reline cost.

  • No preview of what your new dentures will look like in the mouth prior to extractions.

  • They do not always fit as accurately as a delayed denture.

Advantages of Immediate Dentures

  • You will never need to appear in public without teeth.

  • It may act as a Band-Aid to protect the tissues and reduce bleeding following extractions.

  • It allows you to establish your speech patterns early.

  • It also allows you to chew better than without any teeth.

  • It minimizes facial distortion that may occur when natural teeth are removed.

Delayed Dentures

A delayed denture is made and inserted into the mouth approximately 12 weeks after extraction sites have healed.
With delayed dentures a reline is not necessary, but could be required 12 -18 months later.

Disadvantages of Delayed Dentures

  • You will be without teeth for approximately 12 weeks.

Advantages of Delayed Dentures

  • No three month reline cost, however your dentures may need to be relined in 12 – 18 months.

  • You will get to have a preview of what your dentures will look and feel like in your mouth.
